Freedom Isn't Finally Getting Everything You Wanted
"Freedom First, Then Creation"
After we finished writing our last soul-reading piece, "Is Where You Want to Go Just Another Well?", that question wouldn't leave. The frog keeps changing its beliefs, working hard to trust it can arrive — but is where it wants to go still just another well? The words had asked it once. We wanted to ask it again, this time in sound.
Origin
Handing an Essay to Melody
This song doesn't tell a new story of its own — it's almost a line-by-line reprise of that essay: the sky above the well, the practice of changing your beliefs, jumping high enough to reach the opening you long for — and the question that kept getting sidestepped.
We deliberately avoided writing a typical uplifting pop song. Chinese and Western chamber instruments, a single note from the guqin, breath from the xiao flute, a low male murmur answered from a distance by a woman's voice. The first half is steady and urgent, like someone forcing themselves to believe, forcing themselves to arrive — until, at one moment, every instrument drops out at once, leaving only the most naked question standing alone.
Is where it wants to gostilljust a well
Call and Response
If I Can't Get It, Is That Still Okay
The middle of the song is a call-and-response duet between a man and a woman. The man keeps asking: what if I can't get it, what if I never arrive, what if I walk into a world and later want to leave it — and each time, the distant female voice answers with the same one line.
It's not a promise of success, and it's not telling anyone to give up. What this line wants to hold onto is a place you don't have to earn with an outcome.
If I can't get it, is that still okay— it's okayIf I stop believing there's only one answer— that's okay too
The Core
Freedom First, Then Creation
This line later became the one we most wanted to leave behind in that earlier essay too: what's truly worth creating may not be the version that most matches our imagination — it's the world that lets us walk in, and also walk back out.
Freedom isn't finally getting everything you wanted. It's being able to walk into something, experience it, feel it — and then, when you want to leave, turn and go. You can have something without belonging to it. You can create something without being trapped by what you made.
The well is still therethe sky is still thereand Iam no longer only looking up
This Week's Reflection
If the answer in front of you right now isn't the only one life can give you —
would you, too, want to look inside another well?
Your story, too,
can be written into a song.
