Is Where You Want to Go
Just Another Well?

On Belief, Freedom, and No Longer Being Trapped by an Answer

I recently read something about "belief creating reality," and one metaphor in it stopped me for a long time.

A frog wants to leave where it is and go to another well. So it starts changing its beliefs, working hard to trust it can definitely get there.

But the piece asked one question:

Could the place the frog wants to go also be a well itself?

We often ask: how do I believe more firmly? How do I get the life I want, faster?

But we rarely stop to ask: does the picture I long for so badly actually make me freer — or does it just carry me into another familiar limitation?

The Other Side of a Wish

The Hardest Limitation to See Often Looks Like a Wish

Some limitations are easy to spot — fear, self-denial, "I can't do this."

But another kind is more hidden. It can look entirely positive, even energising:

"I have to hit this milestone, or I haven't succeeded."
"I have to have this relationship, or my life isn't complete."
"I have to become a certain kind of person, or I've proven nothing."

There's nothing wrong with the wish itself. What actually traps us is betting our whole worth, our peace, our freedom, on one specific outcome.

If I only allow myself to be okay once I reach that picture, the picture is no longer just a wish — it's a condition.

We think we're creating a future. In reality, we may just be using a new method to walk back into an old fear.

Power and Direction

Belief Can Take You Further, Not Necessarily Wider

Belief is powerful. It can help us act, push through difficulty, and make things possible that we'd never have dared to try.

But belief can only speed up the direction — it can't choose the direction for us.

If we've already decided from the start that "only that answer will do," then the firmer our belief, the faster we might just be arriving at another well.

So instead of only asking "can I get it," it might be worth asking:

  • If I don't end up getting it, am I still whole?
  • If I really do get it, can I still walk away?
  • Does this choice make my world wider, or does it just make me more dependent on one outcome?

Real openness isn't just having one more picture you want in your life — it's no longer being able to live only inside that picture.

Before Creation

Freedom First, Then Creation

What the original piece proposed wasn't "belief creates reality" — it was "freedom creates reality."

I love that distinction.

Freedom doesn't mean wanting nothing, and it doesn't mean losing all direction in life. Freedom is this: I can genuinely choose a relationship, a job, a way of living — but my existence doesn't need them to prove it.

I can commit, and I can adjust.
I can cherish, and I can let go.
I can walk into an experience without turning it into an identity I can't leave.

I'm not free because I got it. Creation only truly belongs to me once I'm no longer owned by the outcome.

Once a goal stops being responsible for defining us, it can go back to its proper place — a choice, not a courtroom.

More Than One Road

"It's All Okay" Isn't Careless — It's Knowing There's More Than One Road

Sometimes we're afraid to loosen our grip, as if the moment we stop holding on so tightly, the wish will simply stop happening.

But "it's all okay" isn't passivity, and it isn't indifference to everything.

It's closer to an admission: the answer in front of me right now may not be the only answer life can give me; the road in front of me right now may not be the only place I can become myself.

When we stop rushing ourselves to arrive by a certain deadline, our view may actually start to open.

We start to see that beyond just "getting it or failing," there's also changing direction, understanding things differently, letting go of the need to prove anything, and some possibilities we never let ourselves see before.

Pause

Before the Next Wish, Ask Yourself

If this thing never happens, what do I believe I'd lose?

Am I creating the life I actually want — or chasing a picture that proves something about me?

Is the wider choice right now to keep pushing forward, or to let the answer change?

We don't need to give up our wishes — we just need to check: are we leaving one well, or rushing straight into another one?

The reality truly worth creating may not be the one that most matches our imagination.

Maybe it's the world we can walk fully into, and also walk back out of — one we can experience wholeheartedly, while staying free.

This Week's Reflection

The one picture you most want to make real right now —
does it make you wider,
or more afraid of losing something?

Some answers you've been chasing
may not need to be figured out at all. Maybe write that story into
a song first, and hear where you truly want to go.
