A Casual Chat That Became a Song

"Just for Today" — a song built on the Five Reiki Precepts, inspired by Suki Kwok

This song wasn't planned — it was talked into being. Suki is a kindred friend we met through a course, and one conversation turned to the Five Reiki Precepts. She started talking about how she'd been using these five lines to steady herself through emotional ups and downs. Listening to her, we felt these words shouldn't stay in just one conversation.

Origin

"Just for Today" Turned Out to Be a Daily Reminder

Usui Reiki has five precepts: just for today, do not anger, do not worry, be grateful, be diligent in your work, be kind to others. These words have been passed down for over a century — many people have heard them, but few really take them to heart. It was Suki's own experience that made us realize how everyday these precepts really are: they don't ask you to never feel angry or never worry, just to give yourself, every day, a fresh chance to choose differently.

That conversation stayed with us long after it ended. Rather than letting it fade with the moment, we decided to write it into a song — one you could play every morning as a reminder that today, you get to start again. That's how "Just for Today" grew from a casual remark into a full melody.

"Just for today, I choose not to be angry / I turn that anger into light, lighting every step ahead""Just for today, I set down every worry / no longer held hostage by the bad endings my mind invents"
— lyrics from "Just for Today"

Turn

The Five Precepts Aren't Slogans — They're a Daily Practice

The lyrics never stay abstract; each precept becomes something concrete you can actually do. "Do not anger" isn't about suppressing how you feel — it's a slow breath, unclenching your fist, noticing the softness that's still there underneath. "Do not worry" isn't pretending everything's fine — it's pulling your attention back, again and again, to the step right under your feet. "Be grateful" doesn't mean ignoring how hard things are — it means still being able to see what you already have, even in the middle of that hardship.

What moves us most is the very last line: "Do it again tomorrow, until it becomes the rhythm you breathe without thinking." These five precepts were never about getting it right the first time — they're permission to keep starting over, until one day it's no longer a lesson you have to remind yourself of, but simply who you are.

"Every encounter has its reason / every turn carries the echo of a gift""Gratitude makes room in the heart for more of the view / no longer just the lack, but how far you've already come"
— lyrics from "Just for Today"

About Suki

Someone Who Turned Her Life Into a Laboratory

Suki Kwok is the founder of "Life In Sync," describing herself as a "life experimenter" — someone who treats chaos as raw material, practicing how to bring soul, life, and action back into sync. The insight she shared about the Reiki precepts is really an extension of what she's already living out: not chasing perfection, but choosing, every day, to recalibrate.

We're grateful she was willing to share something this personal, and let it become a song that others can carry with them too.

Your Words, Too, Might Be Worth Hearing

What Suki shared that day was just something said between friends — and it became a song many people can now take home with them. We often assume that what's worth remembering has to be something dramatic. But more often, what really moves us is just a true word, said to the right person, at the right moment. Is there a sentence like that sitting in you, still waiting to be written down?

This Week's Reflection

If there's a sentence sitting on your heart today, too —
might it be worth writing down?

Your words, too,
might deserve to become
a song.
