If God Really Is Love, Would God Punish Forever?
"Conversations with God" · On Heaven, Hell and Love
I recently came across a really radical idea in "Conversations with God," and wanted to share it.
So often we assume: good people go to heaven, bad people go to hell. But if God really is unconditional love, would God create a place to punish a soul forever?
An Analogy
Like a parent loving a child
When a child does something wrong, a parent might feel pain, might teach, might let the child face the consequences — but real love, surely, wouldn't say: "You were wrong, so I don't want you anymore, ever."
Real love, surely, wouldn't say: "You were wrong, so I don't want you anymore, ever."
Where it gets radical
Hell might not be a place
So when "Conversations with God" says "there is no hell," it doesn't necessarily mean wrongdoing has no consequence — it means hell might not be a place, but a state of living in fear, hatred, guilt and separation.
The book even raises an idea that's hard to accept: that even the darkest soul is never, in the end, abandoned by God forever.
This isn't an excuse for wrongdoing. If anything, the real reckoning may be this: that soul must fully see and feel every bit of pain it once caused. Not punishment — a forced awakening.

Seen this way, heaven may not be somewhere you only go after death.
